    End: 6th September, 2019 @ 10:00PM

presented by LAN E TUYANG

KELUNAN means “People” in the Kenyah and Kayan language. This ambitious joint showcase of Kayan and Kenyah people and culture explores the universal theme of love through a multidisciplinary performance deeply rooted in tradition. Experience age-old poetic singing-storytelling, to dances, to live music and sounds from traditional instruments. The cast consists of cross generational Kayan and Kenyah cultural practitioners including Mathew Ngau Jau (Kenyah), Malaysia’s Living National Heritage and Adrian Jo Milang (Kayan), youngest practitioner of the oral tradition Parap and Takna’. This show is produced by The Tuyang Initiative, an arts management social enterprise in the area of Dayak (Borneo indigenous) cultural heritage.

About the Performers

Mathew is a Sape’ Master with more than 30 years experience. He is a Kenyah Ngorek from Long Semiyang (Sarawak) who not only performs the Sape’, he also takes pride in crafting the instrument. He is acknowledged by the community as the keeper of the Ngorek songs, and an authority on the instrument. He is also a fine artist, who dances and practices the art of the blowpipe. Due to Mathew’s experience on international stages, he also works in creative direction and training of younger traditional musicians and Sape’ makers. In 2015, Mathew was proclaimed a Living National Heritage by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia.

Lan e Tuyang started as a duo by Mathew Ngau Jau (Sape’ Master and Malaysia’s Living National Heritage) and his late uncle, Uchau Bilung. The duo has performed in many international concerts all around the world. In 2009, Uchau Bilong passed away and the group continued under the leadership of Mathew. Lan e Tuyang is now a fluid, traditional Orang Ulu performance troupe with Sape’ music at its core. In 2009, they debuted a new format featuring three Sape’ players and one percussionist at the 2009 Rainforest World Music Festival. In 2017, they performed with a traditional nose-flute performer, Luyoh Rawing and Mathew’s Sape student, Alena Murang. For Spectrum, expect a new host of community performers including Adrian Jo Milang (youngest practitioner of the oral tradition of the Kayan, Parap & Takna’) in a first time format.

The Tuyang Initiative is a social enterprise and arts management company, focused in the area of Dayak cultural heritage. Spearheaded by highly experienced members from the community, it aims to provide sustainable economic opportunities to rural Dayak communities through arts & culture in innovative development and promotion of its community talents, products and services. With that, It hopes to simultaneously encourage the preservation and continued practice of its traditions and cultures.
