Arts Policy, Cultural Democracy and Artist Communities

Panggung Eksperimen @ Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • 12th January, 2019 @ 9:00AM

Arts Policy, Cultural Democracy and Artist Communities is a critical conversation aimed at enriching the cultural policy discourse in Southeast Asia. Convening in Kuala Lumpur to focus on Malaysia, this ANCER Lab Series brings together resource persons from the region as well as Malaysia for a one and a half day event that invites artists, arts and culture workers, funders and patrons, researchers, audience members and anyone with a vested interest in art, culture, heritage or creative industries, to join the conversation.

Following the significant transformation in the Malaysian political landscape in 2018, there has been a surge in discussions amongst artists and members of the creative and cultural communities on arts policy reform and the types of government support they require to continue to remain effective and contributing cultural citizens. With rising desires for change, widespread access to enabling technology for discourse, ways of organizing and new forms of participative action, arts and cultural policy literacy and awareness needs to be increased amongst arts practitioners. The forum takes the starting point that all cultural citizens have equal right and access to practice culture. Join us for a critical and sustained analysis of the policy landscape, and to pool intellectual resources for the connecting of theory and practice and artists and communities.

DAY 1: Talking about Culture and Policy in Malaysia: Past, Present, Future
DAY 2: Regional Experiences – Perspectives from the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan

The main language of the event is English due to the international nature of the event, but translators will be available for assistance.
